House Bill 69 (HB69) has passed the Senate Finance Committee and will be going to the Senate floor for a vote in the near future. Contact your state legislators to advocate in support of the passage of HB69, which serves to increase the Base Student Allocation (BSA). (Find out more about HB69 here.) On this page you'll find one simple action to take, and also more detailed information about letter-writing below.
One easy action. Send a short (50-word maximum) message to all members of the legislature using the “Public Opinion Messages” tool on akleg.gov. Through this tool, you can send your message to ALL state legislators, which we recommend.
Tips:
If you don't have a login and password, use the "Normal Login".
Click the button "Send to all Legislators" on the bottom of the Edit Recipients page to quickly check all boxes.
On the Edit Message page in the Bill Root field you can enter "HB 69" and indicate if you support or oppose it in the next field.
Here is a sample 50-word letter in support of HB69 that you can copy and paste into the public message page (don't forget to add the specifics and delete the placeholders):
I am a parent of [number of kids] students in the Anchorage School District and a constituent of Representative [name of your State House Representative – don’t know who that is? See below!]. Please fight for a significant and sustained increase to the BSA through passage of HB69 or equivalent legislation. Adequately funded public schools are our constitutional right. Alaska’s kids depend on it!
Another option with no edits necessary if you're short on time:
I am a parent of children at Chugach Optional Elementary in Anchorage. Our school is at risk of losing teachers unless you take action. This is urgent; Alaska's future depends on fully funding schools. Please fight for a significant and sustained increase in the BSA (HB69 or other legislation).
Need to know who represents you? Find out here! Click on the link. Scroll down to the bottom of the page. Look for the ‘Who Represents me?’ box on the right side of the page, and type in your full address.
Letter writing. We are encouraging personal details and/or Chugach talking points that go to your legislators in Juneau at a minimum but ideally can be sent to ALL legislators. Specifically, here's what you can do:
Find the individuals who represent you here (scroll to the bottom of the page).
Send to all Legislators (email list to cut and paste into your email can be found here)
Please also send a message governor using the web form.
If you'd like to send a message to our state Education Commissioner, Deena Bishop her address is deed.commissioner@alaska.gov.
Compose a letter
Letters should be concise but should also include personal details about your family, your situation, and what the lack of funding has meant and will mean to you.
Letters should state whose constituent you are but you can still send the email to the entire House and Senate. We are told that education is a priority for everyone. Those who are helping to fight for funding can pull out quotes and hold other legislators up as examples if they aren't responding to their constituents.
Templates and examples are linked here: Great Alaska Schools Template 1, Sample Letter 2, Sample Letter 3. Please feel free to use these for inspiration but add your own, personal details and experience.
If you are a constituent of any of the following legislators, please consider contacting them as these individuals may be on the fence: Rep Julie Coulombe, Rep David Nelson, Rep Mia Costello, Rep. Dan Saddler, Sen. James Kaufman (info from Rep. Alyse Galvin).
